Custom Data Elements
Introduction
Oil and Gas Well Lifecycle Data Management
The Custom Data Element concept is not simply a feature, it's the foundation of Generwell.  The application is installed with data elements from industry standard templates, but every client has different processes and data requirements.  Creating a system with a place holder for every conceivable item of data is not possible, so we created a tool to provide maximum flexibility.  With that in mind, our Data Designer module provides the ability to create any number of custom data elements created to your specifications.
Definition

What do we mean by a "custom data element"?  A data element is a holder of data, or more specifically, a field in the Generwell database.  These data holders include dates, times, personnel, text, checkboxes and dropdown boxes with custom dictionaries.  They can be created by us or your system administrator using our Data Designer module.  If you were to relate this concept to a spreadsheet, a data element would be a column in the spreadsheet.  Once a data element is created, it is available for sharing, filtering, reporting and scheduling.

Example
Let's say you want the ability to assign a "Widget" category to jobs in your database so users can search, sort and report based on the field.  Also, you don't want a free-format field, you want users to select from a dropdown list of Widget options.  A reasonable request, but since your list of Widget options is specific to your company, your list must be created.  Here are the steps:

  1.  Create a new dictionary containing the Widget options
  2.  Create a new dropdown box field associated with the dictionary
  3.  Place the field on the desired tab(s)

All jobs in the database now have a place holder for the Widget category and are ready to accept data.  It's that easy!  The new field is now also available for schedules, reports and searches.
